The People Make the Places, Mike May and Friends

Description

The People Make the Places podcast will drop the first week of each month. Stories will be drawn from the Sendero archive of 240 blog posts from 1997-2018 along with audio recordings of my travel experiences. This will be contrasted with a current travel story including the differences in travel tools. We will sprinkle tips and tricks along with technology throughout. We invite travelers to submit their written or audio stories for inclusion.

Travel for a person who is blind or visually impaired can be super complicated, especially if done without sighted assistance. How this is accomplished will be entertaining and informative to everyone, blind or sighted, who might be limited by the complexities of travel. Our choice is to embrace and meet the challenge of complex travel or to stay home in fear of it.

As a blind person who has logged three million flight miles in 35 countries, I am likely more at ease traveling than the sighted person who travels once a year. This podcast is meant to be entertaining and informative and ultimately to encourage everyone to go beyond their comfort zone in order to better experience the people who make up the fabric of our beautiful world.

Episodes

The People Make the Places, pilot episode 1, September 2024

Mays Portillo ski resort in Chile
Wyndham with dogs at Los Lingues in Chile

Episode Notes

This pilot introduces you to me and the idea of “the people make the places.” It is not a place itself that one remembers about a trip. It is the special people you meet. There are examples of Sarajevo at the Olympics in 1984, 25 blind people traveling in Ireland and Scotland with the first versions of GPS, riding in the cockpit of a 727 over Iguazu Falls, hanging out with Stevie Wonder and more. Blind people use alternative technology and techniques to navigate. This episode is an overview and future episodes will focus on a particular place and person.

Episode 2, Flight for Sight trip to Japan, October 2024

Mike and Gena In front of a building in Osaka Japan
Lamarra Family in Kioto Japan
Check out Flight for Sight

Three trips exploring Ireland over 19 years

Show Notes

This 36 minute episode includes over 20 blind people exploring Dublin and Cork in 2004, two couples walking the Great Western Greenway in 2015 and Mike May and Gena Harper exploring Dublin in 2023. You will hear some original audio as well as some of the original travelers reflecting on the trips today. The communication and navigation tools changed during this time but the zest for exploring and meeting people is a common thread on these three trips. A subsequent episode will continue the second half of this 2004 Ireland WayFun trip to Scotland.
